New hyperlocal publishing platform

Turns out that the folks at Bakerfield evolved themselves away from the vendor platform they started on for hyperlocal publishing and rolled their own. And now, they are willing to share with other newspapers.

Serving niche communities required a completely different approach that had interactivity and personal expression (persona) at its core. After exploring several technology options, we realized that nobody was doing what we knew we had to start doing now in order to be relevant in our community 30 years hence.

This resulted in us building our own community publishing and social networking platform … (About Us)

At least one other newspaper group has developed its own platform for serving up hyperlocal content — YourHub.com, from the Denver Newspaper Agency. I can’t say for sure that the Bakerfield model is better, but I know it’s worth a look.

Compare Bakerfield’s The Northwest Voice and The Southwest Voice with, for example, the Englewood, Colo. edition of YourHub, and make up your own mind.
